Growth loops grow by reusing it.

A growth loop is a closed system where the output of one cycle becomes the input of the next. A user does something. That action produces a result. The result pulls in another user or brings the same user back. Then the cycle repeats, feeding itself. No new ad spend per turn. The engine is the product, not the media budget.

This is the shift that separates companies that compound from companies that plateau. Below is how loops actually work, why they beat funnels, and how to build one that runs.

Funnels leak. Loops compound.

A funnel is linear. Traffic goes in the top, a fraction converts, the rest is lost. To grow, you pour more into the top. The moment you stop paying, the flow stops. Every new customer costs roughly the same as the last one.

A loop bends the funnel back on itself. The output reconnects to the input. One user creates the conditions for the next user. Growth stops depending on a constant cash injection and starts depending on the number of cycles the system completes.

The practical test is simple. Ask one question about your growth: if we froze the marketing budget tomorrow, would new users still arrive? If the honest answer is no, you have a funnel. If the answer is yes, you have a loop.

The four parts of any loop

Every working growth loop has the same skeleton. Name each part for your own product and the gaps become obvious.

Input. The new user, the session, or the piece of data that enters the cycle.

Action. The thing the user does that has value beyond their own use. Sharing, publishing, inviting, creating content, generating a link.

Output. The artifact that action produces. A shared file, a public page, a referral, a search-indexed result.

Reinvestment. The mechanism that turns that output back into a new input. The output must reach or reactivate a person.

Most loops break at reinvestment. Teams build a great action and a great output, then forget to close the circle. An output that no one new ever sees is a dead end, not a loop.

The main types worth knowing

Loops are not one thing. They run on different fuels, and the fuel decides the speed and the ceiling.

Viral loops. A user brings another user directly. Invites, shared documents, referral links. Fast when they work, but they depend on the sender getting something out of sharing. People share tools that make them look good or save them effort, not tools that only benefit the company.

Content loops. User activity creates pages that get indexed and found. A review, a public profile, a generated report. Each artifact becomes a doorway for a stranger searching for that exact thing. Slower to start, but it accrues and rarely decays. This is where growth and search overlap, and it pairs closely with a real content marketing strategy rather than one-off posting.

Paid loops. Revenue from existing users funds acquisition of new ones, and those new users generate more revenue than they cost to acquire. This is still a loop, just one denominated in money. It only spins if your unit economics are positive, which is why loop thinking and pricing are inseparable.

The strongest companies stack loops. One product often runs a viral loop and a content loop at the same time, so a stall in one does not stop the machine.

Why most loops stay slow

A loop can technically exist and still barely move. Three numbers decide whether it compounds or crawls.

Cycle time. How long one full turn takes. A loop that completes in a day beats a loop that completes in a month, even if the monthly one converts better per cycle. Shortening the time between action and reinvestment is often the single highest-leverage change you can make.

Conversion at each step. Every stage leaks. If only a fraction of users take the key action, and only a fraction of outputs reach a new person, the compounding effect gets crushed. Small percentage gains at each step multiply across the whole loop.

Branching factor. How many new inputs one cycle produces. A loop where each user brings less than one new user will decay to zero. You are chasing a number above one, and everything upstream exists to push that number up.

How to build one from scratch

You do not design a loop by picking tactics. You design it by finding an action your users already want to take that happens to expose your product to someone new.

Start with the natural high-value action. What do engaged users do that produces something outside the app? If your product creates documents, links, images, or results, that output is your loop’s raw material. Do not invent a share button no one asked for. Find the moment sharing already makes sense and remove every gram of friction from it.

Then close the circle deliberately. Trace exactly how the output reaches a new person. If you cannot draw that arrow, the loop is broken. Make the output as useful and as visible to the newcomer as it is to the creator.

Finally, measure the loop as a loop. Not signups, not traffic. Track cycle time, step conversion, and how many new inputs each cycle yields. Then run experiments against those three numbers specifically. This is where a disciplined approach to marketing experiments turns a vague loop into a measured engine.

Where AI changes the math

AI shifts the economics of two loop types at once. Content loops used to be limited by how much an artifact a user could produce. AI tools let one user generate ten useful, shareable outputs where they used to make one, which raises the branching factor without extra headcount. Viral loops benefit too, because the output an AI product creates, the image, the summary, the answer, is often inherently shareable and impressive on its own.

The trap is generating volume with no reinvestment path. A thousand AI outputs that never reach a new person is still a dead end. The loop rules do not change. AI just lets you spin the wheel faster once the wheel is built correctly.

Getting started

Pick one product action that already produces something outside the app. Draw the four parts on paper: input, action, output, reinvestment. Find the arrow you cannot draw. That missing arrow is your entire growth problem, and closing it is your next month of work.

If you want a second set of eyes on where your loop leaks, or help wiring AI into the action and reinvestment steps, that is exactly the kind of work we do. Message the Neurounit team through our Telegram bot and bring the paper sketch. We will find the broken arrow together.

Related articles

How to
