Blue gradient, stock icons, three bullet points per slide, a headline no one remembers. The tool worked. The slide failed. That gap is the whole story of AI for presentations right now.

AI is very good at the parts of deck-making that drain your time: structuring an argument, drafting slide copy, generating first-draft visuals, and reformatting content across slides. It is bad at judgment. It does not know which slide is load-bearing, which claim needs proof, or when to cut a slide entirely. Treat it as a fast junior designer, not a strategist, and the output changes completely. Here is a workflow that produces decks people actually sit through.

Start with the argument, not the slides

The most common mistake is asking AI to «make a presentation about X.» You get 15 slides of loosely related content with no spine. Fix this by separating two jobs: deciding what to say, and making it look good.

Before you touch any slide tool, use a text model to build the argument. Prompt it for a one-line thesis, then the three to five claims that support it, then the single piece of evidence each claim needs. That is your outline. If the argument does not hold in plain text, no template will save it. This step alone kills more bad decks than any design choice.

A good test: read your outline out loud as if it were a short pitch. If it sounds like a coherent story, the deck will follow. If it sounds like a list of topics, go back.

Let AI draft the copy, then cut it in half

AI writes fast and writes long. Both are useful if you know the second half of the job. Ask the model to draft slide headlines and body copy from your outline, then apply one hard rule: every slide gets one idea and one takeaway headline.

Replace topic labels with sentences. «Market Overview» is a label. «The market doubled while incumbents stood still» is a takeaway. A reader who only sees your headlines should still understand your argument. Use AI to generate ten headline variants per slide, then pick the sharpest one yourself. The model gives you range. You provide taste.

Kill any slide that does not change the reader’s mind.

Cut body text until only the load-bearing words remain.

One chart per slide, one message per chart.

Use AI for visuals, but direct it hard

Image and layout generation is where AI decks go generic. The fix is specificity. Vague prompts produce vague, templated results. Detailed art direction produces something that looks intentional.

Give the model your brand rules up front: the exact colors, the mood, what to avoid. Tell it the aspect ratio and where text will sit. If you need a diagram, describe the relationship you want to show, not just «a diagram.» For consistency across a deck, reuse the same style reference on every image so the visuals read as one set rather than a random gallery. If you are building a repeatable visual system, our guide to an AI image generation workflow covers how to lock a look and reproduce it.

One rule saves most decks: if a generated image does not carry meaning, delete it. Decorative AI art reads as filler. A plain slide with a strong headline beats a busy slide with a stock illustration every time.

Reformatting is the quiet superpower

The least glamorous use of AI is often the highest value. You have a long document, a transcript, a set of notes, or last quarter’s deck. Turning that raw material into slide-ready structure by hand takes hours. AI does it in one pass.

Feed it the source and ask for a slide-by-slide breakdown: what goes on each slide, in what order, with a headline and three supporting points. You still edit the result, but you start from 70 percent instead of a blank canvas. This is also how you keep a deck alive. When the numbers change or the audience changes, you regenerate the affected slides instead of rebuilding from scratch.

Match the deck to the room

A deck you present live and a deck you send by email are different objects. AI happily produces one and calls it both, which is why so many decks fail in one of the two settings.

A live deck is a backdrop. Few words, big visuals, you carry the narrative. A sent deck has to explain itself with no presenter, so it needs more context on each slide. Tell the model which one you are building. Better, ask it to produce both versions from the same outline: a lean stage version and a fuller read-alone version. That is minutes of work with AI and hours without it.

Where AI still needs a human

Two things stay yours. First, the facts. Models invent statistics, misattribute quotes, and state confident numbers that are wrong. Every figure, source, and claim in a deck has to be verified by a person. A fabricated number on slide four destroys trust in the whole presentation.

Second, the cut. AI adds. It rarely subtracts. The instinct to remove a slide, to say less, to trust one strong point over five weak ones, is human judgment the model does not have. The best AI-assisted decks are shorter than the ones the AI first produced. If you want to sharpen the words further, our notes on writing that converts apply directly to slide copy.

Getting started

Pick one deck you already need to build. Do the argument in plain text first, draft the copy with AI and cut it hard, generate visuals with tight art direction, then build the live and send versions from the same outline. You will feel the time savings on the first try, and the output will not look like everyone else’s AI slides.

If you want a workflow tuned to your specific tools and brand, or you are trying to build a repeatable deck pipeline for a team, come talk to us in the Neurounit club.
